Consumer Electronics Alert :: Use Of HDMI Version Numbers Now Prohibited

Mar 13, 2012 3 Comments by

Maybe this is common knowledge and I’ve been sleeping under a rock, but I just discovered this today and I’m a little bit sceptical as to the reason for this to say the least.

Are you aware that all manufacturers of consumer electronics products bearing the official HDMI logo and branding are Prohibited from including the HDMI version number?

Effective 01 January 2012 all manufacturers are prohibited from including the version number. A questions arises here;

Why?

Here’s the vid from the hdmi.org site which gives an overview of the trademark usage. Go to 03:13 into the vid to see the extract I am referring to. Watch it all in fact as it’s quite short. I did and I didn’t find an explanation for the move. Maybe further explanation is contained in their documentation, right? I’ll check it out.

I’m not typically a cynical person and I’m sure there is logical reasoning but it sounds to me that hdmi.org are not being completely truthful with the buying public with this decision.

Am I missing something here? I appreciate your feedback.

    Its very true, the statement is too vague and i really dont understand the advantage behind it. Specially now they are using longer words like” High Speed HDMI with Ethernet, etc- which will be hard for integrators and even end users to understand the true specs (1.4 VS 1.3).. i hope they make it simple ..

    Just my take on this (salt it any way you want).

    The HDMI® standard has not so much changed but maybe been added to over the few short years it has been in place. It may now be confusing to the average consumer to add version numbers to it ….. do I need version 3, or 4, or 4a ??? It appears as though you can use the version number as long as you include and define the capabilities of it up front in the labeling or branding of the product.

    Another take away could be for retailers of HDMI® product to recognize the HDMI® logo correctly so we know that what we are putting out there is legit(?).

    hdmi.org should clear the air about all of this.
